Who I Am ~ Epilogue

I didn't think that the story would turn out this way. I initially wanted to write a story about Mitsui Hisashi and his no.1 supporter his sister. I've always thought Mitsui as the most interesting character of Slam Dunk because his story already started in junior high while the others don't have clear histories.

Mitsui walked different paths which makes him someone with a layered past. When a character already has such a background it is much easier to think of side stories. Besides the background Inoue-sensei also reveals a lot of his personality: we can clearly see Mitsui's pride, strength and sorrow.

My fictive character Shizuri had to have a strong personality as well. (It probably runs in the family...) During my writings I slowly took a different direction than my original concept. Shizuri is still a strong person, but her major weakness is her affection for her own brother.

Some may dislike the unethical aspect of this implied romance, but let me clarify one thing: Mitsui has never known that his sister had romantic feelings for him. He is still just her brother and he will never think differently about that.

Besides, I think at the age of 12 or 13 romantic feelings are one big source of confusion. Did you know that between the age of 12 and 16 a lot of juveniles have homosexual or bisexual feelings? It's part of the age and part of the stage of life that one is going through, so it doesn't necessarily mean the person really is gay (which is perfectly fine though. This world should finally wake up and realize we are all human beings walking this Earth and love is love no matter the gender of the people involved).

Shizuri's affection for her brother means nothing romantic in the end. Just sometimes she loves him so much that she forgets the connection in bloodline. I think her return not only is a great support to Mitsui but is also a great relief to herself, because she finally cleared up her mind and got the answers to her long time questions.

I think it's a story of hope and maybe also love. But having Shizuri falling in love with Rukawa didn't seem realistic, because I've always thought that Rukawa's lover had to be someone as Shiori.

It was my chance to give the character Rukawa a more human touch without him losing his cool attitude. Also, I try to explain that nobody can be so extremely cold and not caring. Everyone has a secret inside that they do not wish to share. Rukawa's strength is not determined by the support that he gets, but by his lacks.

If you've read the entire story, all the way to his epilogue, I want to congratulate you with your performance! I've always considered my writings kind of boring, because I talk too much. As I said before, I'm kind of a philosopher not knowing when to stop talking.

I think every writer puts something personal in his/her stories, and I believe I'm no exception. So the people who read my fanfics probably know me better than they want to. Writing is an outlet of my thoughts and fantasies, so it's in fact a way to clear my mind. And having someone to read it is of course really flattering. So thanks for reading my story.

PS: the story consists of 14 chapters, which is of course not just coincidence.

PPS: Sendoh making his entrance in chapter no.7 is just coincidence.
